You are warmly invited to our Open day on Thursday 18 October.  This is an opportunity for parents, as well as Year 4 parents in the primary feeders, to see our school in action.

Please come along at one of four starting times:  8.50am, 10.00am, 11.30am and 2pm.  There will be a short introductory talk followed by a tour of the school.  You will be able to see our specialist facilities, meet teachers and see pupils in their classrooms.

IMPORTANT CHANGE OF DATE
THE ADVENT CONCERT
IN ST MARY’S CHURCH STOKE BY NAYLAND
WILL NOW BE ON TUESDAY 4 DECEMBER AT 7.30 p.m. (not Wednesday)

STAFF/PARENTS/GOVERNORS CHOIR

The pupils have all started rehearsals for our Advent concert and, following the success last year of our combined choirs, I am once again searching for any of the above who are able to sing!   Whether you are a soprano, alto, tenor or bass—any voices will be most welcome!   Adults will be singing with the pupils and supporting them.   Rehearsals will take place on Mondays after half term in the Performance area in school between 4.00 and 5.00 p.m. on the following dates:  October 29, November 5, 19, 26 and December 3.   Also November 12 from 4.30—5.30 p.m.
If you are able to sing then could you please send a note to me with your child stating your type of voice.

I look forward to seeing many of you after half term.

RECORD NUMBER OF PUPILS PLAYING INSTRUMENTS!

Over the past seven years, the number of pupils having instrumental lessons in school has been steadily increasing.   This is partly due to the fact that extra teaching time has been able to be purchased through a variety of means.   There are now 107 pupils having instrumental  lessons with our visiting teachers!   This really is a record high.   In addition to this, we have been fortunate enough to receive an hour of Wider Opportunities teaching under the Government’s initiative which means that a whole Year 5 class (5AR) is
receiving a weekly hour of tuition on the violin and ‘cello.   This means that we have a grand total of 135 pupils having instrumental lessons in school.

MY SQUASH LIFE
By Owain Taylor 7OL

Squash is fast becoming a serious hobby for me as my skills improve and success brings more competition.   At the moment, at Under 13, I am ranked number 2 in Essex, 6 in Wales and 17 in England, although I have beaten the Welsh number 2 and 3 comfortably and the English 6 and 11.

Recently I was invited to compete in the English Grand Prix in Birmingham and came 8th out of the top 16 boys.  On the day, I played the English number 1 in my second match—I played well but lost 3-0 but felt I came away stronger for the experience.

The weekend before, again in Birmingham at the British Grand Prix, I finished 5th, losing to Richie Fallaows (Essex No 1, English No 5 and soon to be No 2) keeping him on court for 50 minutes before losing 3-0 in hard fought games 9-7, 9-5, 9-7.

I have been offered a sponsorship from Head, who also sponsor the World Men’s No 2 Ramy Ashour.   I now have to make a choice of countries, whether to play for England or Wales,  since I have been invited to come up from the Welsh Excellence Squad to train with the Welsh National Squad.

PLAYLEADERS
Written by Emily Payne

The young leaders had a training day on Thursday 13 September.   They learnt how to lead games and activities that they will soon take and play with other years.

Their first task was to hold a charity event which happened on Friday 28 September.   There was footy ‘keepy-upies’, basketball shootout, juggling workshops and a space hopper race. The event went very well with a total of £120 raised.

With thanks to the young leaders—Alex Moss, Bradley Hazell, Henry Cole, Howard Walsh, Josh Short, James Long, Jessie Dockerill, Amber Furssedonn-Coates, Ellie Shackell, Charlotte Thornton, Hannah Dodd and Emily Payne.
