Information for New Pupils and Parents

School Day
Pupils should be in school by 8.50 and sat at their desks by 8.55.  School finishes at 3.50.  There is a morning and afternoon registration period to check attendance and give out messages or receive letters.
 
There are five lessons every day, each one lasting approximately one hour.  There are two lessons first thing followed by a break of 20 minutes.  One more lesson before lunch at 12.40.  There are two lessons in the afternoon.
 
Curriculum
Pupils follow a secondary curriculum from the start of Year 5.  In Year 5 they will have the following subjects: English, Maths, Science, Art, Design Technology, PE, Humanities, Religious Education, French, ICT, Music and PHSE (Personal, Health and Social Education).
 
Pupils are set in Maths and English from the start of Year 5.  All other lessons are in their form classes.  In Years 7 and 8 pupils are also set in French.
 
Year 5 pupils also go swimming.  Two classes go together to Hadleigh pool once a week for half of the year.  At February half term the two classes swap over.  If Year 5 are not swimming they do Key Skills which involves brushing up on key Maths and English concepts.
 
Homework
In Years 5 and 6 homework is mainly given in the core subjects of English, Maths and Science.  In Years 7 and 8 homework will be given in most subjects.
 
Reports to Parents
Parents will receive an interim report in November saying how their child is getting on.  Parents’ Evenings are held in February and March and a full report for each subject is written in the summer term.

Food
Our Milk Bar serves a range of snacks at morning break including mini pizzas, cheese on toast, muffins, flapjacks and bacon bread.  Hot lunches are served in the dining hall at lunchtime.  All food is cooked on the premises.
 
Water
There are water fountains around the school, both inside and out.  Pupils may also bring plastic bottles of water into school.  Fizzy drinks are not allowed.
 
School Shop
The school shop is open every Thursday lunchtime and sells most equipment that may be needed.
 
Contact with School
The School Planner is the best way of giving messages to school.  Outside of this, please telephone the office.
 
There is a drop-in after school every Tuesday if you would like to see the Head, Deputy Head or Office Manager.
 
Appointments to see teachers or senior staff are always welcome.  Please telephone the office.
 
A newsletter is issued every 2 weeks.  You will also find it on the website.
 
Clubs
Lunchtime clubs run every day – please see the website for details. These are all free and run by teachers.  After school clubs also run every day.  Application forms are available at the front office for after school clubs.  These are run by groups such as ‘Premier Sport’ and involve a small fee.
