History and Geography

The rationale behind teaching both these subjects in the school is to learn about other people in other places and times so that children can better understand their own world.

In History we learn about the Egyptians, Tudors and Victorians in years 5 and 6.   In year 7 we study medieval Britain, including the Battle of Hastings and the building of castles.   With year 8, the focus is the English Civil War, the creation of the United Kingdom and the Black people of the Americas.

In Geography, we set our own area in the context of the world.   We learn how to read maps,  use an atlas and how to prepare sketches and diagrams in years 5 and 6.   In years 7 and 8 we study world sport, Brazil, coastal erosion and climate conditions.

Both subjects offer plenty of opportunities for drama, role play and group work and the inclusion of ICT.   There are also a number of exciting out of school visits.
